What are implant retained dentures?

Implant-retained dentures serve the same purpose as removable dentures by replacing missing or extracted teeth. However, instead of relying on adhesives, they are affixed in place using implants inserted into the jawbone, offering enhanced comfort and stability. Consequently, they can provide a comparable level of functionality to natural teeth.

Why choose implant retained dentures?

Implant-retained dentures offer a more stable and comfortable option compared to traditional removable dentures. They also afford greater flexibility and freedom for patients, allowing them to enjoy a wider range of foods, including harder-to-eat items like steaks, apples, and chewy treats like fudge or toffee.

What is the treatment journey like?

Similar to all implant procedures, we commence with a personalised consultation where we review your oral health history and discuss available options to determine the most suitable course of action. Successful implant placement relies on adequate jawbone density, so we conduct a cone beam CT scan to assess your eligibility for the treatment.

Once the planning is complete, we invite you back in to have your implant retained dentures placed. This will be done in two stages, with the titanium pegs placed first under local anaesthetic so the area is numb for maximum comfort. We wait a couple of months for the pegs (implants) to integrate. We are then able to clip your bespoke dentures onto the firm retentive pegs. A temporary denture can be provided to you in the interim.
